実は、言語によって学ぶ難しさが違うという事実があります。

例えば、韓国語は日本人学習者にとって比較的簡単です。その理由は、韓国語の文法が日本語にとても似ているからです。そのため、難しさとしては、文字（漢字を学ぶよりもはるかに簡単）と語彙くらいのものです。 しかし、英語、ドイツ語、またはフランス語は日本語と類似点が少ないために、日本人にとって習得するのははるかに難しいです。さらに、"false friends"（英語から借用されたが異なる意味で使用される単語）、例えば"マンション"のような言葉によってさらにややこしくなります。では、これらの言語を学ぶのを簡単にする方法がありますか？より効率的な方法は？

1. プロセスを楽しむ

このアドバイスは、実際には言語学習に限ったものではありません。子供たちにゲームや歌を通じて教えるのには理由があります。脳は何かを楽しむときに、物事をより速く覚えるという特徴があります。そして、このことは年齢とともに変わることはありません。プロセスが苦痛で退屈に感じる場合、それは全体として脳がこのひどい経験を記憶に留めることを嫌がるため、学習の速度が遅くなります。私たちは皆、異なることを楽しんでおり、そのため、読書を通じて覚える人もいれば、ポッドキャストやラジオを聴くことで覚える人もいます。重要なのは、あなたがすでに楽しんでいるものと英語を混ぜることです。

2. 一歩一歩進める

子供たちにとって物事を簡単にするもう一つの理由は、彼らの英語でのコミュニケーション能力と母国語でのコミュニケーション能力の間のギャップが小さいことです。大人は、最初から母国語と同じぐらいのレベルでコミュニケーションを取ろうとしてしまう傾向があります。赤ちゃんのレベルに戻るという事実を受け入れてください。単語、文法、言葉を理解する力のどれもが、長くて複雑な文を作るためには必要となります。たくさんの間違いをします。それは大丈夫です。私たちがまず立ち上がり、その後歩き、そして走ることを学ぶように、まず短くて簡単な文を作ることを学んでから、長くて複雑な文を作ることを学ぶ必要があります。

3. 時間をかけるほど近道

4. 困難を乗り越える

Why is it so difficult to learn a new language?

Some languages are easier than others to learn, and that is a fact. The Korean language is famously easier to learn for Japanese learners thanks to their grammar being so similar. It leaves only the writing system (by far easier than learning kanjis) and remembering vocabulary.

But English, German, or French, are by far way more difficult to master because there are very little similarities. Worse, the “false-friends,” words borrowed from English, but used with a different meaning, such as mansion for example, make things even harder. So, is there a way to make learning these languages easier? A more efficient way?

There might just be!

1.       Enjoy the process

This advice is not actually limited to learning languages. There is a reason why we teach small kids through games and songs. The brain remembers things faster when you take pleasure in the process. And this never changes with age. If the process feels painfully boring, then it will be all the slower, as the brain frowns at committing to memory this terrible experience. We all enjoy different things, and as such, some will remember better through reading, others through listening to podcast / the radio. The whole point is to mix English with something you already enjoy.

2.       Take it step by step

Another reason making things easier for kids than for teenagers or adult, is the lower gap between their communication abilities in English and in their native tongue. Adults tends to want to communicate as eloquently in the language they learn as in their own language from the get go. Make peace with the fact that you are going back to baby level. You will lack the words, the grammar, the understanding, necessary to make long and complex sentences. You will make mistakes. A lot. And that is alright. Just as we first learn to stand up, then walk, before we can run, so do we need to first learn how to make short, easy sentences before we can make long, complex ones.

3.       More time is less time

If you look at the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), it takes about 300 hours to go from one level to the next. This means that the more time to spend per week studying a language, the faster you will improve it. If you spend one hour per week, it will take you about 6 years to move up one level. If you were to spend one hour a day, it would take you less than a year. And if you were to spend 3 hours a day, you would level up every 4 months. As such, the more time (spend per week), the less time (it takes on the long term.)

That is the very foundation of why people living abroad improve faster, as they end up being in contact with their target language almost 24/7. 4.       Hardship over easiness

I am not saying that some things are not too difficult to be understood at first, but it is not uncommon to hear learners complain of the difficulty of a lesson or course, and, in the worst of cases, give it up to pursue in another class, with a level they consider to be easy.

It is perfectly natural to react in such a way. We naturally try to achieve the most with the least of efforts. Unfortunately, if you find it easy, it, in fact, means that it is below your level, and you are learning little, if not nothing at all. Of course, if it is so difficult that you understand nothing at all, then you will not learn anything either. The good level is when you feel it is difficult, but you can still understand part of it. Look at it as you would going to the gym. If you want to build muscles, you need to put on more weight, add more repetitions, to the point that it is difficult, slightly painful, but still doable.

5.       Do not judge yourself!

It might feel weird to say, but you should avoid judging your own level or progress. First, because we are always harsher with ourselves than with others, and second, because you need a very high level of mastery to be able to correctly gauge someone. As you are still learning, you will most likely feel like you are not making any progress.

This comes from the fact that we always compare what we can do in our native language with what we can (or cannot) in our target language. It is not easy to do, but remember that it took you years to be fluent in your native tongue. Your teacher is the one capable of telling you if you are making steady progress or not, and what your weak points are. Believe them!

Learning a new language is undoubtedly a challenging endeavor, but it is also an incredibly rewarding one. By enjoying the process, taking gradual steps, dedicating sufficient time, embracing challenges, and avoiding self-judgment, you can significantly enhance your language learning journey.
